Even for certain aging populations, traveling by car is not always a safe option. For people with chronic conditions or disabilities, it can be a difficult and sometimes painful experience to see a doctor in-person. Using telemedicine to bridge the gaps in healthcare provider access can ensure that people are able to receive proper medical care, regardless of their location. Not everyone has access to a healthcare provider, but 90% of Americans do have access to the internet in some way or another, whether it be through broadband internet or through a smartphone. Telemedicine Improves Access to Healthcare And that’s just the start of the benefits telemedicine has to offer: Telemedicine is by no means the end of patients entering your office at the very least, it can reduce time in the waiting room and allow you to focus more energy and effort on more serious cases. This might include tracking blood pressure, blood sugar levels, or other types of medical data. Telemedicine can also be used to monitor patients remotely while using specialized medical equipment. Nowadays, it’s common for telemedicine to be done live over video, text, and/or audio chats. But thanks to modern technology, telemedicine is no longer performed only over landline phones. Telemedicine is not as new as people think it is it’s technically been around since the 1950s, starting with the use of landline telephones. Telemedicine may involve discussing symptoms and issues with a patient, giving them a diagnosis, sharing treatment options, and prescribing medication, all from a remote location. They have contrasting personalities and abilities: Sapphire is an emotionally reserved Gem who held a high rank on Homeworld, with ice-related powers and the ability to see into the future while Ruby is impulsive and hotheaded, has fire-related abilities, and was a common foot soldier on Homeworld. Ruby (voiced by Charlyne Yi) and Sapphire (voiced by Erica Luttrell)-the two smaller Gems who are the components of Garnet-first appeared in " Jail Break". The second-season episode " The Answer", a flashback showing how Ruby and Sapphire met and formed Garnet for the first time, was nominated for an Emmy Award and adapted into a children's book. Though she is normally stoic, Garnet's strongest emotional displays are often centered around fusion: anger and revulsion at what she perceives as abuses or perversions of fusion, and delight when Steven develops the ability to fuse. The character of Garnet has won acclaim from critics as a representation of a queer relationship. Garnet's existence is thus a personification of Ruby and Sapphire's loving relationship-she describes herself as "a conversation" and "made of love"-and her personality is a stable blending of Ruby and Sapphire's traits. In the first-season finale " Jail Break", it is revealed that Garnet is a fusion of two smaller Gems named Ruby and Sapphire. Garnet has three eyes, over which she wears a visor. She also has a precognitive ability she refers to as "future vision". She possesses red garnets in the palms of her hands, from which she summons her Gem weapon, a pair of heavy gauntlets. According to the writers, her great self-confidence is reflected in the fact that she never asks questions. The disciplined current leader of the Crystal Gems, Garnet (voiced by Estelle) is quiet, stoic, pragmatic, and described by Steven as "mysterious", but over the course of the series she becomes more emotionally open, especially in expressing her love for Steven. In Future, Steven wrestles with feelings of purposelessness now that the battles he spent his early adolescence fighting are resolved, and copes with the lasting psychological trauma from the stress he experienced while fighting them. The sequel series, Steven Universe Future, focuses on Steven's psychological state in the aftermath of the events of the main series. Other long-lasting character arcs involving Steven include his anxiety about filling his mother's place in the Crystal Gems and coping with her complex legacy and his developing friendship with his human best friend Connie. His gemstone gives him a wide range of magical abilities one of the long-term story arcs of the series is his progress in learning about and mastering these abilities, beginning in the first episode with his first successful attempt to summon his Gem weapon, a pink shield. Steven is caring, protective, brave, gentle, forgiving, and eager to help the people he loves with their problems his optimism is often a source of strength for the other Crystal Gems. At the beginning of the show's narrative, he is in his early teens but appears younger due to the interaction of his Gem magic with his aging process. Rose is described as having "given up her physical form to bring into the world" as the first Gem-human hybrid, and her gemstone is embedded in his navel. In the show, Steven is the son of Greg Universe, a human musician, and Rose Quartz, the former leader of the Crystal Gems. His portrayal as a male character whose heroism is based on traditionally feminine attributes such as empathy and nurturing, and who seeks to live up to the legacy of his heroic mother, has drawn favorable reaction from critics. His characterization is loosely inspired by series creator Rebecca Sugar's younger brother Steven Sugar, a background artist for the show. The titular protagonist of the series, Steven Universe (voiced by Zach Callison) is the youngest and only male member of the Crystal Gems. Many people are fleeing from their devastated countries and cities to survive or seek a better life, attempting to escape the violence in their communities by moving to other countries. This refugee situation is unparalleled since the end of World War II. In Syria alone, the mere survival of more than half the population is threatened because of violence and lack of food. And if you zoom way, way out when talking about refugees and displacement, countries in the Middle East, Africa and the global South have taken in more than their fair share of refugees. Khoury, the researcher, says race plays a part in all of this but also proximity and geopolitics, too. LIMBONG: The Nigerian statehouse issued a statement today denouncing reports of Nigerians being denied entry to the Polish border. You know, looking and seeing why African migrants aren't allowed to cross into Hungary is just as valid as just asking why Ukrainians are. KESHAVARZ: So as journalists, I think it's really critical that we look at that duality, and we question why that is. LIMBONG: Keshavarz points to Poland accepting Ukrainian refugees when not that long ago, the country was telling scores of Afghans, Syrians and Iraqis, no, the country's full. RANA KHOURY: We certainly do see it play out in terms of the politics of refugee reception in the idea of whose burden should it be to take refugees who are from the global South, the Middle East, Africa, versus, you know, who is welcome and who can be brought in here. LIMBONG: Rana Khoury, a research associate at Princeton University focusing on conflict and displacement, says this language has impacts on global refugee policy. KESHAVARZ: And I think one very dangerous thing that we're seeing is - and it bears asking the question - is, have journalists become so desensitized to the suffering of different peoples of color, specifically people that are in war zones, that we're no longer seeing on the same level playing field? LIMBONG: Mahdis Keshavarz is a board member with the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association, which put out a statement criticizing this framing, which Keshavarz says relies on old tropes. MAHDIS KESHAVARZ: I always kind of think this imagery of, like, this pearl clutch of being just aghast that something can happen in your backyard, where things are happening in other people's backyards all the time. An anchor for Al-Jazeera English called Ukrainian refugees, quote, "middle-class people," in comparison to refugees from the Middle East and North Africa. In The Telegraph, Daniel Hannan wrote an article about Ukraine that led, they seem so like us. LIMBONG: The phrasing rankled enough people that he issued a clarifying apology a day later.ĭ'AGATA: What I'd hoped to convey is that what's unique about the fighting underway here is that this country has not really seen the scale of war in recent years, unlike some. NPR's Andrew Limbong has more.ĪNDREW LIMBONG, BYLINE: On Friday, CBS News senior foreign correspondent Charlie D'Agata framed the fighting in Kyiv like this.ĬHARLIE D'AGATA: You know, this is a relatively civilized, relatively European - I have to choose those words carefully, too - city where you wouldn't expect that. The way we talk about conflicts can impact those who are already most directly affected by war, refugees. In the wall-to-wall coverage of the crisis in Ukraine, a certain pattern has sometimes emerged that positions Ukrainians as different from other victims of conflict. For this reason, as a general rule, the entrances to my base always include an upwards staircase. This is also a great place to put your butchery, as any rotting items will not produce miasma in these "outdoor" squares.īuildings cannot be toppled from below, so locked floor hatches offer a relatively easy way to secure your fortress from building destroyers. The channeled out squares will still be considered outdoors for the purposes of growing crops. If you want an outdoor garden that is sealed from the outdoors, channel out a large'ish square and then roof it over with flooring. I tend to expel unhappy humans or elves that I had graciously allowed to join my fortress (where's the appreciation?), and I relocate the dispeptic dwarves once such a location becomes available to me. This is relatively non-traumatic too because no body is left behind, but don't forget to memorialize them!Īs a humane way of dealing with malcontents, the Steam version comes with a new feature: expelling or re-locating units to allied locations. Temporarily assign them to a squad if you are having trouble luring them into place. If your fortress is otherwise happy, these malcontents can be weeded out through "accidents" involving atom smashers. Some citizens are impossible to please due to their unique combination of traits. Prepared meals produced from the eggs alone will feed your fortress for quite a while and offer good trade value too. If an item lands in one of those tiles, your dwarfs cannot get to the item and you need to deconstruct the building. All workshops have some non-pathable tiles, and statues and archery targets are also non-pathable. I find diagonal paths/corners block miasma way better than doors do however. For the dead giant hamster, check if the body is located in a non-pathable tile. To be less exploity, you may use doors and add some track and another track stop. Code: "=" = Small refuse/corpse stockpile To sum it all up it's a story about a little girl who was abused at home by her parents, and forced to sell matchsticks for money. So, why would she even think of burning anything? Well, there is a direct answer for that, but first here is a story by Hans Christian Andersen. Meanwhile, she carries only a lit match and Bernie. Thanks Girl Scouts!" for the Ball and Cup trinket.Ībout her whole 'low max sanity' schtick, it seems that she burned down a large number of houses in her DS Portrait. We can tell Willow was a girl scout from her straight up confirmation with her tent quote- "I got all the badges in girl scouts.", as well as a bonus "Spinning the stick in the hole could start a fire. She's also got a few more tiny random perks so, let's blast through 'em. Willow can also cook food on it for 1% durability, but only Willow. It is enough to not lose sanity from darkness, though. It lasts 600 seconds, but it only has a light radius of a cooking crock pot. Start with it, and you can craft it with a rope, gold nugget, and 3 petals. At least Bernie can even attack shadows.įinally, uh, the lighter. Wouldn't exactly say it's a better companion than Abigail, but. He does 50 damage, and 2 second attack speed. In fact, he actually fights all creatures. Now he has 2,000 Health, and he will not only taunt Shadow Creatures, but actually fight them. If a Willow is near an "active" Bernie, this happens. Kind of useless because you cannot tank shadow creatures even with Bernie, so kiting without him is basically the same as kiting with. He comes to life with 1,000 Health, and will start dancing to lure all Shadow Creatures on his screen radius towards him, and attack him. When someone goes insane near him though, he turns "active". Only Willow players can equip him, which gives them +60 insulation and +5 sanity/minute. Inactive is when he's tiny, and can be used in your inventory. He won't have your healthcare financed through taxes, but he is packing a different solution to shadow monsters. Well, not too bad I guess, just make sure to pack two thermal stones for Winter if you're Willow. She also freezes twice as fast as normal characters, and has an inherent -10 insulation. But she does overheat 17% slower, so that's neat. Willow is the alternate beginner character, having a slightly more difficult play style to help players get more in touch with the scary stuff.Īs a pyromaniac, Willow takes zero damage from fire. Of course, he isn't meant to have perks so he gets a pass for it. Oh, and about what he can do, Meat Effigies. And that's why Wilson having a beard is only slightly helpful. See, the problem here though, is that a single Bunnyman farm can produce much more beard hair than Wilson, due to the simple fact that upon reaching 40% Sanity or below, Bunnymen become Beardlords, who drop 1-2 Beard Hair. When you die, you can just teleport to an effigy right next to a chest with everything you need to survive long enough to get your stuff back. To be fair, this is actually one of the best resurrections methods, imo. When used, the player will break out of the meat effigy- with no max health penalty. If the player who has it attuned dies, they will get a "Activate" button with a Meat Effigy icon under their hud clock. It will automatically be attuned to whoever crafted it. The meat effigy takes 4 boards, 4 beard hair and 40 health to craft and is available for prototyping at a Prestihatitator or Shadow Manipulator. The beard hair is used in crafting the Meat Effigy. Doing so gives 10 sanity, and an amount of beard hair depending on its size. Wilderness, if you die, you basically restart your player progress from scratch and pick a new character, but the world itself is preserved.Īwesome, the point about character re-start being unique to Wilderness is completely unmentioned elsewhere!Īlso, running a dedicated Docker server, we didn't see any kind of "countdown" when we both died, it was just, boom, re-set.He can shave his beard with a Razor, a craftable tool in the tools section. In Survival, if everyone is dead, the world will start a (pretty long) countdown timer, and if you don't revive in time, the world resets.Įndless worlds will also respawn some natural resources that have been destroyed if they fall too low, like burned away Berry Bushes. Although related, the terms " Hebrews", "Israelites", and " Jews" are not interchangeable in all instances. In the Hebrew Bible, the term Israelites is used interchangeably with the term Twelve Tribes of Israel. However, modern scholarship interprets El as the subject, "El rules/struggles", from sarar (שָׂרַר) 'to rule' (cognate with sar (שַׂר) 'ruler', Akkadian šarru 'ruler, king' ), which is likely cognate with the similar root sara (שׂרה) "fought, strove, contended". The folk etymology given in the text derives Israel from yisra, "to prevail over" or "to struggle with", and El (god). The name Israel first appears in the Hebrew Bible in Genesis 32:29 where it is given to Jacob by the angel with whom he has wrestled because he has "striven with God and with men, and ha prevailed". The inscription refers to a people, not to an individual or a nation state. The inscription is very brief and says simply: "Israel is laid waste and his seed is not". 1209 BCE, in an inscription of the Egyptian pharaoh Merneptah. The name Israel first appears in non-biblical sources c. Other groups have also claimed affiliation with the Israelites. Jews trace their ancestry to tribes that inhabited the Kingdom of Judah, including Judah, Benjamin and partially Levi, while the Samaritans claim their lineage from the remaining members of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Levi who were not deported in the Assyrian captivity after the fall of Israel. Jews and Samaritans both trace their ancestry to the ancient Israelites. The Bible also portrays the kingdoms of Israel and Judah as the successors of an earlier United Kingdom of Israel, though the historicity of the latter is also disputed. However, it is widely supposed that there may be a "historical core" to the narrative. Most modern scholars agree that the Torah does not provide an authentic account of the Israelites' origins, and instead view it as constituting their national myth. Following a severe drought in Canaan, Jacob and his twelve sons fled to Egypt, where they eventually formed the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The Israelites were later led out of slavery in Egypt and subsequently brought back to Canaan by Moses they eventually conquered Canaan under the leadership of Joshua. Īccording to the Bible, the Israelites are the descendants of Jacob, who was later renamed Israel. Some of the Judean population was exiled to Babylon, but returned to Israel after Cyrus the Great conquered the region. The Kingdom of Israel, with its capital at Samaria, fell to the Neo-Assyrian Empire around 720 BCE while the Kingdom of Judah, with its capital at Jerusalem, was destroyed by the Neo-Babylonian Empire in 586 BCE. In the Iron Age, the kingdoms of Israel and Judah emerged. They spoke an archaic form of the Hebrew language, which was a regional variety of the Canaanite language, known today as Biblical Hebrew. Modern archaeology suggests that the Israelites branched out from the Canaanites through the development of Yahwism, a distinct monolatristic-and later monotheistic-religion centred on the national god Yahweh. The name of Israel first appears in the Merneptah Stele of ancient Egypt, dated to about 1200 BCE. 'Children of Israel') were a group of Semitic-speaking tribes in the ancient Near East who, during the Iron Age, inhabited a part of Canaan. |
